In February 2006, Columbus tow truck operator William Peck was found guilty for causing the death of 22-year old Danielle Knapp, who tragically died when Peck’s 20-pound towing pulley crashed through the windshield of her car as she was driving by the truck. The judge ruled he was guilty of reckless homicide. Peck was found negligent for not having the proper equipment to pull a heavy truck out of the mud.
Ohio law does not provide adequate safety standards or regulations for tow truck operators. They operate in the Buckeye state with very little safety oversight. There are no restrictions regarding the storage fees and add-on charges that can be billed.
Ohio citizens are being taken advantage of by an unfair system that allows tow truck operators to have little or no recourse for their abusive practices and outrageous storage fees. Predatory towing is happening in Ohio and across the country.
The Web site is a response to the growing number of consumer complaints regarding the practices of certain tow truck operators throughout Ohio. It was established by the Ohio Insurance Institute, which is a public information and trade association representing property/casualty insurance companies conducting business in the state.
